A Deterministic Christmas Carol

I first had this idea probably eight years ago. It's weird how simple, low-stakes activities like drawing a comic can become such a insurmountable ordeal in your brain.

In other news, do people even use their own websites to publish comics anymore? It used to be such a mark of prestige but now I feel like a relic of a bygone blogosphere era. If you don't post your stuff on instagram, reddit, twitter, etc. you can't expect anyone to ever see it anymore. The medium is the message as they say - I guess my message will just remain extra-small.

Hourly Comics Day 2020

Every year I took notes with the intention of making the annual February 1st hourly comics, but just didn't end up drawing them. These may be very late, but I'm proud of myself for finishing them at least.

Messing Not Recommended

I've been drawing on my girlfriend's iPad lately, and good god it is so much better than how I used to draw these comics. Which, if you're unaware, was dragging a computer mouse around to trace scanned-in pencil sketches in Flash MX 2004.

So it turns out I do have some mental health issues after all. They've been plaguing me for a long time now but I only recently realized it. I'm hoping that that was what was keeping me from working on comics, and now that it's being addressed I'll start to update with some semblance of regularity. To anyone who knows me in person and reads this, there's no need to worry, the situation's fully under control.

It's been a really tumultuous handful of months on my end. Sorry for the MIA, I hope it's over with now but isn't that always what we comic people say? I still have hope. This is a pretty dinky joke but I just needed something to break the silence. All these half-done Traveler and other high-ish concept comics were really weighing on me.

I don't really know what I'm trying to say with these sad ghost comics, and it strikes me that they come across as preachy, which I dislike intensely. I guess I just like writing about relatable, negative situations. I hope you guys don't mind.

Grave Responsibilities

Thanks for the emails and other responses guys. There is an interesting split in opinion. I think it's going to depend on the individual comic whether I post it all at once or one "page" at a time, but I'm certainly more willing to try the one "page" at a time than I was before. We'll see how this goes, and you guys/gals feel free to comment on how it's going anytime you like.

(I put pages in quotes because I don't expect one "page" of some comics to necessarily be the same size as the rest. Trust me it'll make sense when it happens.)

Parking Validation

Hey you people who like my comic and care enough to read these blurbs, I want to pick your brain about something. If I were to hypothetically (not that hypothetically) draw a short story comic, say 8ish pages, would you rather I post it a page at a time as I finish them, or wait until I've finished the whole thing and then post it all at once? I have a lot of ideas for short stories, and I've been trying to decide how to present them (of the two above options) and thought maybe if someone had feedback, that would help. I personally would prefer to hold off until the whole thing's done, but that's leading to a lot of excess time between updates (and I usually end up caving and just posting one-off gag strips like above). If you have an opinion on this matter, please write to me at Connor(at)DrawingBoardComic(dot)com.

While you're at it, feel free to weigh in on this topic too: What do you think about gag comics vs. non-humorous comics (like say, the Traveler series)? Is it good to depart from the gag jokes every now and then? Would you prefer I made non-humorous comics more frequently than I am now? Would you prefer I went back to nothing but gag jokes? I get the sense that this isn't a big deal with people, but I'd still love a semi-random sampling of opinions.

Another film adaptation of a comic, this time of the comic Onions. Here is the video. I'll add this to the faux-FAQ section of the contact page, since this has come up like five times, but let me just announce that if anyone ever wants to adapt one of my works into some other medium, that's totally fine with me (as long as you're not profiting off it, naturally). I still welcome emails of course, but I think my naturally slow response time to emails has caused people to miss windows of opportunity where they could've filmed such things, and no one wants that.

So, as per tradition, here's my explanation of where I've been this last month. I just finished taking a class here at college that involved making a comic. You see, there's this child advocacy's group called Safe Shores here in DC. Basically they're an organization that helps kids who have been through trauma in one way or another. And see, all the reading material they had for kids, things like pamphlets and magazines describing why bullying is bad or why it's okay to be sad sometimes, were really campy and the kids that were coming through their office just couldn't connect to them. So what my class tried to do was produce some reading material that would actually be useful. Just due to the nature of that task, I don't know if it's possible to make wholly non-campy material, but my group tried to tackle domestic abuse in foster homes and this is what we came up with. I, of course, don't claim ownership of this. My whole group collaborated on writing it, and there were other groups in the class doing the same thing (which is why there's a series name and issue number and that). I don't really think any of you will be interested in the content of this thing, but I figured I might as well put it up here if anyone was curious. Ultimately I just hope we could help Safe Shores in some way, they're a really amazing organization.

Also, this summer, I'm working with Elizabeth Warren's Senate campaign. She's a pretty great lady, you guys. If you can vote in Massachusetts and wouldn't mind doing me a favor, read up on this lady (and also vote for her?). I promise you, she'll make a great senator.

Expectations

Disclaimer: This message is like 90% pointless yammering. It's probably a better use of your time if you just don't read it.

I got so caught up last update with Sanjay's comic that I forgot to mention that Drawing Board is now three years old! Which really, doesn't make any sense. On one hand, I can't believe I've been doing this for three years. And on the other hand, I can't believe I've only been doing this for three years. The impact of this comic in my life seems to have rippled retroactively into all the years I've lived, to the point where I can't remember what it was like not to have this running. It feels omnipresent. But don't interpret that as bemoaning, for I really love doing this, to the point where my demeanor gets noticeably worse the longer I've stalled a particular update. Creating all this crap is just irrevocably a core trait of my person at this point.

Also, what a three years it's been. You can look back through the archive and view this weird quasi psychological development I went through. All those stupid as hell throwaway jokes that just make no sense, escalating to the excessively elaborate run-on comics, and then all this weird downbeat shit I've been doing recently. If I wasn't so desperate for comic ideas that were A) doable and B) I at least kind of liked, I would take a serious step back and wonder where the fuck I'm taking this thing. What happened to the goofy jokes? Why can't I think of those any more without dragging them on for 20+ panels? What the fuck is with all this moody, self-deprecating shit I insist on putting up constantly? Someone get in your best psychological hypothesizing armchair and take a crack at that mystery. I'd love to just be able to write some jokes without forcing myself to think them over from every conceivable angle; until inevitably I can no longer ascribe any comedic value to them whatsoever.

But seriously, let's move back on topic now. I define this comic in my mind as a test ground for whatever I want to make. But I think this project has been going on long enough that I have to start treating it as it's own entity. This isn't just some window I hang things in to amuse passersby, it's its own presence in a way. I've invested a lot of time, effort, and emotion into this comic, and apparently there are people out there who like it for one reason or another. It feels like, at this point, there are certain actions I could take that would be a disservice to this archive; it would be, if you will, possible to ruin what I've built up here. And if things have gotten to the point where there is something to actually ruin, then maybe I've really created something solid here. I have to sometimes ask myself while brainstorming "Is this idea something that would fit on Drawing Board?" And increasingly often, that answer is no, and I rework the idea until it's passable. It's certainly worthwhile to take occasional risk though, like with the Traveler series for instance. I think that turned out very well, and have a lot of plans with where to take that. Really I've just got a lot of plans for everything, but the issue of getting those plans to the point where they're ready for print is a whole trial in itself. I find the title "Drawing Board" is becoming more appropriate, as this place is really just becoming a dumping ground for flitting little ideas of mine in comic form. But you know, maybe what I have here already is something to genuinely take pride in. Maybe this site has evolved past another contender for where you, the internet user, should spend this given 30 seconds of your life, and into a place that can legitimately entertain people. I don't think that evolution is anywhere near complete, but the fact that it's going down that path is something that warms my heart a little. Of course, it feels incredibly presumptuous to type all that out, but I'm still pretty proud.

Wow so, I didn't mean to turn this post into a goddamn State of the Comic Address. If you're reading this part, sorry about all the drivel you most likely just powered through. I have a problem with brevity sometimes, if not most times. I also have a problem with not realizing how boring my prattling must get. Jesus. Luckily I get the impression most people who visit this site don't read this comment section (especially when it's this long), so hopefully it won't be a big nuisance. But maybe in some way, this writing style is appropriate given the whimsical nature I try to approach this whole comic with, just typing out words haphazardly until I've probably lost even the most dedicated reader's interest. I'm going to add a disclaimer to the top of this post either way. So people will know what they're in for.

Let me just say before I go though, thank you so much for reading. You have no idea the extent this comic has improved my life. Even in my gloomiest hours I can recall some of the emails I've gotten and my spirits can't go anywhere but up. It's part of the reason why it doesn't feel right to put ads or merchandise up, I'm already getting so much out of this, I can't imagine asking for more. To anyone that may worry during my disturbingly frequent hiatuses that I may abandon this pursuit, know that I cannot fathom ever doing so. I literally want to keep making comics until the day I die or my drawing hand is amputated. At which point I'd have to find an artist partner to continue I suppose. So again, thanks so much, and I hope these last three years are followed up by many, many more.

Ugh, I don't really like this comic and it's an incredibly awkward time for me to post it, but it's all I have ready. You see, I am in the process of shipping out to college (George Washington University, if anyone's interested), and as such have had very little time for comics. This state of affairs will continue for another week or so, because my college is 400 miles from home and as such I have to figure out a way to make comics that doesn't necessitate access to my home PC. Which really is probably a blessing in disguise, as my current comic making process is appalling. I promise I will execute the transition with the greatest haste I can muster.

There's a small discrepancy between the file names and the URLs because when I moved the comic to its own site, I removed about 35 comics from the archives. I plan to put them on here eventually, just in an archive that is segregated from the standard one. Now if only I could find the time...

But yeah, 200 comics! A barrier slightly more elusive than the oft-celebrated 100 comics milestone. Hooray. Here's to the hundreds to come.

Dang so sorry about the radio silence, that malware attack really mucked everything up. I don't know why we keep getting hit (well I mean, it's probably because this is a site that gets decent traffic and that was kinda lax on security until recently), but we'll try our hardest to make sure it doesn't happen again. I hope our outage didn't inconvenience anyone, and if it did, feel free to contact me and I'll try to pay for the damages (Note that I can only pay in jokes).

So about this Traveler thing. You guys were probably expecting a story arc, well that's not what's going on here. This comic series was made a series over individual comics in order to introduce this concept. In the future, I'll make more Traveler comics (unless there's large public outcry not to, I suppose) but they will likely not be made consecutively. Considering I'm having trouble coming up with good jokes lately, the next one will probably come sooner rather than later, though. But yeah, I just wanted an outlet to tell absurd little tales, and this is how I plan to do it. I hope you like them. (Just a small clarification, what I mean is that future Traveler comics will be episodic, in much the same way as Bad Comics, or Spirit of Despair is. I'll make 'em when I get an idea for one, basically. But for now, back to jokes.)

I hope no one thinks I'm trying to preach positive messages or anything with this series of comics. Really I just enjoy making them, and you're allowed to think whatever you want about them. This may sound presumptuous, but to me they're something of a love letter to The Little Prince. Well, they're like 70% love letter to The Little Prince, 25% tribute to Rice Boy, and 5% thank you note to Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei. I don't know, I like all of them.

Hello everyone, I'm back. Sorry for the hiatus, regular updating will now resume. I've spent the last 3 months working very hard on the above comic (and many months previous to that researching the comic medium), which I do hope you like. I feel it's worth noting that this is not a comedy, in fact it's a tragedy. This was the main reason it was archived in this out-of-the-way way, so as to not contrast so sharply with this main archive, which is for the most part comedic. But yeah, I wanted to write a big write-up about this project but I don't think you'd be that interested. So I guess if there's anything you'd like to know in particular, feel free to just email me about it. I also just did this giant research project on story comics, so if you have any questions about that I could try to field those, too. It's a cool subject that I'd love to talk about, at the very least.

On a different subject, attentive readers may have noticed this site got hit with malware multiple times over the hiatus. I sincerely apologize for letting that happen. To my knowledge the problem has been dealt with completely, and I hope it never comes up again. But if it does, we'll be ready.

Guest Comic by Buttersafe

Buttersafe is my favorite comic. I have a habit of being hyperbolic about this kind of thing, but right now I mean it like I've never before. Buttersafe is the best comic on the internet. It inspired me to start my own webcomic, and really all I want out of this webcomics game is to one day be as good as them. But alas, I know that to be an impossible dream. When I read Buttersafe I feel like I'm reading the golden age of a comic's history, but then I realize this golden age was always in place, is still going, and is not likely to ever stop. I would link to my favorite Buttersafe comics right now, but if I did I would be linking you people to at least 90% of their entire archive. Getting a guest comic from these guys, who by the way are Ray Castro and Alex Culang, is on par with the highest honor I could receive as the small-time webcomic creator that I am. If you are not familiar with Buttersafe and think I'm blowing things out of proportion here, I challenge you to read some of their archive and still disagree with me. You will never regret it.

So maybe you guys are sick of guest comics by now. Well, good news and bad news. Good news, I'm more or less out of 'em. Bad news, I'm not done with my huge project yet, so regular comics will not resume for a little while yet. I still have some outstanding guest comic invitations, so there might be one or two more coming down the pipes, but probably not. I promise I'll finish my project and get back to doing this as soon as I can. It shouldn't be more than a couple weeks, honestly. I will put updates about how the project is going on Twitter, if that is something you care about.

Guest Comic by Stuart Taylor

Stuart Taylor is one half of the dream team behind Chain Bear. He does it along side his wife (awwww, how sweet), Lauren. While the above comic was made solely by Stuart, I'm assuming it comes from Chain Bear as a whole, so let me tell you a little bit about it. I like to think of Chain Bear as a newspaper comic that doesn't have to worry about any little kids reading it. It's funny in that biting, sometimes racy, take-no-prisoners kind of way. The only flaw in this comparison of Chain Bear to newspaper comics is that Chain Bear is good. They're also one of those comics that make it look effortless to be funny. You see Chain Bear and think "Wow, this is great! I bet I could do this!" and then you actually try to do it and you think "Holy hell this is insanely difficult! How in the world do Stuart and Lauren make this look so easy? Are they magic!?" The only real down side to Chain Bear is that the subjects of their jokes are often topical, so if you haven't been reading it as it goes, maybe the joke doesn't hit its full impact (also, get with the times, punk). So basically, you should have been reading it already, but if you haven't been, at least go get caught up now so you're not laughed at anymore. Although fair warning, Chain Bear definitely has some crude content, so brace any sensibilities you may have.

Guest Comic by Drew Mokris

You may remember just a little while ago I told you about Left-Handed Toons and one half its dream team, Justin Boyd. Well, now the time has come for me to tell you the tale of Drew Mokris. Drew is Justin's partner at Left-Handed Toons. Which, if you're not following closely, means he draws all those comics with his non-dominant hand. Seriously, step back for a second and think about that. Chances are you have trouble even brushing your teeth with your lesser hand, and meanwhile Drew's making this. I'm sure everyone's sick of the whole "How the heck can they draw all this with their left hand? That's amazing." angle, but it's really just that unbelievable. With Left-Handed Toons, this drawing with their left hand isn't even a gimmick. It's as if Drew and Justin one day thought to themselves "Yeah we could entertain thousands of people everyday with our hilarious comics, but where's the challenge?" But of course, that's implying it's even a challenge for them to do this anymore. Which if you look at what Drew makes, it's hard to imagine it is. On top of that, Drew's artistic style matches the whimsy of his jokes incredibly. Looking at his work, you get the sense Drew is able to produce exactly what he was going for in every comic. And let me tell you, that is not an easy thing to do. I mean, look at the above comic. He copied my terrible design of DJ Tinyface to a tee, and yet he integrated is seamlessly into his own style. But Drew's appeal doesn't end at his art. His comics take you on a ride with their whimsy and hilarity, and I can't imagine there exists a person on this Earth that would not find them enjoyable. As far as Drew's other work, he's kind of had his finger in the internet pie for some time. But I think it was obvious from early on that he was destined for greatness.

Also, I'm such a big fan of Left-Handed Toons that I do not apologize for the length of this message.

Guest Comic by Max Huffman

Max Huffman is a comedic powerhouse. He only can he produce hilarious jokes, he can produce them on a wider range of subject matter than almost anyone else I can think of. And I'm not even going to start with his mastery of expression and ability to draw, because thinking about that makes me furious with envy. I would also mention his age here, but I'm sure he gets enough of that as is. Max does a plethora of comic projects, and your time would not be wasted looking into any or all or them, but my favorite is Mocktopus. Tragically, Mocktopus is currently on hiatus. But its archive still provides plentiful laughs, and here are some examples. Hopefully Mocktopus will return one day, but even if it doesn't, as long as Max is around, jokes will abound.

Guest Comic by Justin Boyd

I honestly think I don't have any readers who are unacquainted with Left-Handed Toons. They are consistently hilarious, whimsical, and amazing. They are so good you cannot even believe it's made by just one person. And it's good that you don't believe that, because that's false. It's made by two people. Today's guest comic is from one half of the duo, Justin Boyd. Justin's comics are something of an enigma. On one hand, his drawing style is simpler than even mine, but on the other hand he is able to utilize that style to create comics of a caliber far beyond anything you would expect from stick figures. To get right to the point, his stuff is always great. But that's not all, in addition to Left-Handed Toons, he is also half of another comic called Draw Until It's Funny. I strongly recommend you peruse both.

In more self-centered news, some guys decided to make a Drawing Board Reader for the Apple App Store. I lack any sort of App-capable Apple product, so I have no idea what it's like, but I would bet it's good. So if this is something you've ever wanted, well, you're in luck. If you are reading this on an Apple product (if it gets these comments, it might not), then you are already ahead of the game.

Today marks the start of a pretty long period of guest comics. You may remember me mentioning a certain project I was doing. (PS: That notice is now void, thanks everyone for your help.) Well that project's taking up 100% of the comic drawing time I will have for some time to come, so while I'm working on it, it's guest comic time. On the bright side this means pretty damn regular updates.

I really don't know who else I could have had do my first every guest comic other than Sanjay Kulkarni. I don't know how much I could say about Sanjay without losing your interest, so let's just boil it down to the fact that he's amazingly funny, incredibly nice, and smart enough to be a doctor. He was my first real webcomics colleague, and I don't think I will ever meet a better one. (No offense, other webcomics people.) I think anyone out there who has ever wanted to laugh owes it to themselves to read some of his comics.

(By the way, Sanjay's comic utilizes a character from an old comic you may not remember.)

Spirit of Despair #3

Well, it's February 16th, 2011. That means this comic is officially 2 years old. Hooray! It's hard to believe I've been doing this for two years, and no matter how clich that sentiment may sound, let me tell you it's true. Thank you guys so much for bringing me this far. I don't think I can begin to describe the sense of fulfillment making this comic gives me. I can no longer imagine what my life would be like without it. So here's to 2 years, and hopefully there will be many more to come.

Hourly Comics Day 2011

Mock Trial, if you don't know, is this program where your school has a team that role-plays a court trial against another school's team. It's like a mix of legal debate and acting, and it's awesome. I thought it was about time for me to have a guest comic week, but I also didn't really feel like having one. So, after some thought, I decided to fake one. All this week I am going to be making comics reflecting the way I think other people would make comics for me if I asked them for guest comics. I think it's gonna be pretty cool, you guys.

Today's comic is not from, but is imitating the style of, Sanjay Kulkarni of Cowbirds in Love. He had to be first because he already owes me about 5 guest comics (and a month of website maintenance). Whenever I get around to actually getting a real guest comic from him, we can see how accurate this fake comic was.
